We will assign a structural engineer as a project manager, field superintendent, engineer and other staff members as required to effectively manage the construction process. Coordination Process

During the construction of any project, the coordination of the trades is an integral part of the process, especially with respect to the mechanical and electrical trades.

Getting people together in nonthreatening environments where they can interact openly helps build trust and ultimately, relationships where people are encouraged to coordinate with each other.

Effective coordination is vital to the success of construction projects, however, it’s often difficult to achieve and can end up filling projects with an endless cycle of mistakes. Researchers have identified 64 different coordination activities by people working on typical construction projects. So the sheer volume of coordinating tasks limits effective coordination, plus, there are systemic factors as well.

Management strategy in construction is largely taken from other industries, according to researchers from the Journal of Organizational Management Studies. The problem is, those other industries, such as manufacturing, don’t have the fragmented participants and processes that construction has nor do they have as many closely dependent and dissimilar activities on a critical path. So, coordination in construction takes a disjointed path instead of a straight one.

Even when you have figured out how to keep your team coordinated, you now have the challenge of finding the most effective method. Too often, coordination in construction fails because there’s too much of it, or too much of the wrong kind, according to researchers from the Journal of Management in Engineering. Researchers also found that quality coordination doesn’t always rely on the expected forms of communication. For example, engineers saved time when they reduced written coordination. The time needed for coordination is one aspect of assessing its effectiveness.

Commissioning and Project Closeout

One of the most critical stages of the construction process is the commissioning and closeout of the project.

Project commissioning is the process of assuring that all systems and components of a building or industrial plant are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to the operational requirements of the owner or final client. A commissioning process may be applied not only to new projects but also to existing units and systems subject to expansion, renovation or revamping.

In practice, the commissioning process comprises the integrated application of a set of engineering techniques and procedures to check, inspect and test every operational component of the project, from individual functions, such as instruments and equipment, up to complex amalgamations such as modules, subsystems and systems.

Commissioning activities, in the broader sense, are applicable to all phases of the project, from the basic and detailed design, procurement, construction and assembly, until the final handover of the unit to the owner, including sometimes an assisted operation phase.
